Notes on Earle Hagen's Recording Career
Earle Hagen's six-and-a-half decade (!) recording career goes back to his teens when as part of his membership in the leading big bands of the 30s, cutting records was as routine as appearing at theaters and hotels or performing for top radio shows.
Following his military service, Earle Hagen enjoyed a period as a freelance arranger. He did orchestrations and arrangements for such artists as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Tony Martin, Dick Haymes, Francis Langford and Helen Forrest.
Earle Hagen also occupied a chair as 'house arranger' with Liberty Records, and frequently did similar chores for Mercury and MGM Records. In his own right he has recorded a number of albums in conjunction with film and television projects . Of special interest was the recording he did with actress Marjorie Lord, composing and conducting the score for "Claudia's Letter" (see below).
Along with his scores, Earle Hagen has released a number of easy-listening albums during the Spencer Hagen Orchestra era. Of particular note was the salute to his friend songwriter Harry Warren, "I Only Have Eyes For You." His latest recording is a new compilation of music from the “I Spy” series released in 2002 through Film Score Monthly.

”Claudia's Letter” was a unique spoken-word album with a religious theme, based on a letter from the wife of Pontius Pilate to a friend telling her about how Jesus Christ cured her lame son and what terrible consequences happened in their lives after Christ was put to death. Earle Hagen composed the music and conducted the orchestra with good friend Marjorie Lord reading the Letter. It is a most imaginative musical composition, and a work Earle Hagen is particularly proud of.

Few may realize that in addition to movies, TV and records, Earle Hagen has also written music for the stage. Why not? Earle Hagen tells the story in his own inimitable style.
